The San Miguel Beermen played a great game against the Liaoning Flying Leopards even without injured teammates June Mar Fajardo and Marcio Lassiter to land in the semifinals of the 2019 East Asia Super League Terrific 12 held in Macau.
Despite that, the Beermen were unable to handle the NBA veteran players, Lance Stephenson and Salah Mejri, and end up with a harsh 111-89 defeat.
During the end of the first quarter, things still went fairly as San Miguel were only down by three, 26-23. But the the Flying Leopards went out of control in the second quarter leaving a 51-30 lead.
Dez Wells also got into a foul which heightened the opponents’ lead with the small forward getting three fouls in the first half.
“At the start we thought we would play well but we got into foul trouble especially with our import,” Beermen head coach Leo Austria said.
In the second half, the Beermen were still able to play even with Liaoning but the huge lead was too overwhelming for the team to surpass.
Stephenson blocked the San Miguel’s defense making up 35 points and 10 rebounds whereas Salah Mejri also contributed a big 21 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks.
“Lance Stephenson is a really high caliber player and it’s hard to contain him and he’s got a lot of support from Salah Mejri and a lot of local players who really performed well for them,” Austria mentioned.
Beermen lost possession of the ball 17 times, leading the Flying Leopards to gain another 15 points off turnovers.
With 13 steals in the game, Liaoning intimidated the Beermen in the paint scoring 20-second chance points off of 14 offensive boards.
Terrence Romeo was the one who led the team garnering 19 points, five rebounds and six assists whereas Wells contributed 16 points during the game.
