The movie trailer of the star-studded stage musical Cats was released on Thursday, July 18, and it has mixed first impressions from the viewers.
The film will be released in December, featuring Taylor Swift in her first role, together with Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, James Corden, and introducing the English ballerina Francesca Hayward.
The film was created using the faces of the actors with their bodies covered in computer generated fur while singing and dancing.
Expectators have expressed quite disappointed opinions about the film, saying the creator of the movie could have just used animated characters.
Besides that, Scott Mendelson, a film critic for Forbes.com, said on Twitter that the film is “appropriately terrifying and insane like a drug-induced nightmare. I can’t wait!”
Some say that they understand that the producers wanted to recreate the cats like how they were in the stage play, but critics said that it is just outrageous and weird.
However, the trailer racked up more than 100,000 views in its first hour in YouTube and #Cats topped on Twitter.
The Cats’ experience
The stage musical is based on poems by TS Eliot. The stage play started in 1981 and became one of the longest-running shows on Broadway and in London.
In a behind-the-scenes video, Judi Dench, an Oscar winner and one of Britain’s most admired actresses, said that the film is “an Alice in Wonderland experience.”
Moreover, Taylor Swift, who’s known as a hardcore cat-lover, shared that the casts had to go to workshops to do the extensive movement and embody their feline characters.
“As a cat lover, and a cat owner, he (Hooper) told me I was going to get to go to cat school every day. For work! What?!,” Swift said in the behind-the-scenes video.
The film is directed by Tom Hooper, who is also an Oscar winner for “The King’s Speech.”
“Cats” is also the first movie adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s successful stage musical.
