House Speaker and PHISGOC chairman Alan Peter Cayetano has conveyed his message to those who criticized the country’s staging of the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games at the closing ceremony of the event on Wednesday.
“For those of you who did not believe, for those of you who said this could not be done, for those of you who said this stadium will not be built on time, for those of you who said ‘sayang ang pera, dapat hindi tayo nag-host,’ sa lahat ng nagkalat ng fake news, ang masasabi ko sa inyo, at ito itaga niyo sa bato: Peace be with you,” Cayetano said in his speech.
Early on, PHISGOC was criticized in the Games as several football teams experienced various problems and inconveniences upon arriving in the country.
The issues eventually subsided after the opening ceremony and the Games concluded with a bang as the Philippines bagged the overall championship for the second time in history with 149 golds, 117 silvers, and 121 bronze medals.
Cayetano earlier said foreign delegates were surprised with the negative outlook towards the SEA Games.
“Nagugulat sila sa negativity. So, nasasanay sila, ‘yung negativity comes from the rival country, kung meron man. Hindi sila sanay na nanggagaling sa citizens mismo no’ng bansa na ‘yan,” he said.
However, Cayetano focused on celebrating the achievements of the athletes and thanking the volunteers for their help in the hosting duties.
“Christmas came early,” he said. Meanwhile, as the event ended, the Office of the Ombudsman still has created a seven-member panel to look into possible corruption in the organizing of the Games.
