China reveals Favilavir as first antiviral drug to fight COVID-19

The government of Taizhou in Zhejiang province declared Sunday that Favilavir, formerly known as Fapilavir, an antiviral that has shown efficacy in the treatment of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), has been approved to be sold in the market.

It is the first antiviral drug approved by the National Medical Products Administration for marketing since the outbreak happened.

The drug is expected to play a vital role in preventing and treating the pandemic. The government said on its verified WeChat page that it was developed by Zhejiang Hisun Pharmaceutical Company.

On Saturday, the Ministry of Science and Technology said that Favilavir is one out of three drugs which have shown significant effectiveness in drug trials to fight the COVID-19.

On Sunday, the first antiviral drug was set for production.
