This coming April, the annual celebration of Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) will launch its summer edition “to encourage the industry to create more films.”
Metro Manila Summer Film Festival (MMSFF) will feature eight entries to be chosen by the selection committee of MMFF.
The movies will air in theaters nationwide within the 11-day festival which will officially begin from April 11 until April 21.
Just like the yearly MMFF celebration, there will also be a traditional Parade of Stars to be held on April 5 and an awards night on April 15.
The deadline of entry submission for those who wish to take part in the MMSFF will be on February 15.
“We are hoping na sana makatulong ulit sa industriya. We are not expecting P1 billion [in terms of gross sales] pero at least kalahati, P500 million. It will really help the industry ng pelikulang Pilipino. ‘Yun naman ang purpose natin sa talaga sa MMFF, to help the industry,” said Jojo Garcia, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority general manager.
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, a new member of the MMFF Executive Committee, was the one who proposed to have two film festivals in a year.
Last December, Go said that having another film festival in a year will allow other promising entries to have the chance to appear in cinemas.
“Iyong mga hindi po napasok dito [MMFF 2019], may pagkakataon kayo sa summer festival,” he said.
In the past years, the MMFF is usually held once every year, starting from Christmas Day, December 25, through the first week of January. During the festival run, chosen MMFF entries are the only films allowed to be shown in local cinemas
Throughout this period, only the chosen MMFF entries are allowed to be shown in Philippine cinemas (except IMAX and 4D theaters).
