Disney just dropped the first trailer of the live-action remake of “Mulan”.
A preview of the upcoming film was during the World Cup final game.
The remake is based on the 1998 animated film about a Chinese woman who disguises herself as a warrior to substitute his ailing father in the military. The original film grossed more than $300 million worldwide.
The live-action version of the film, however, is directed by Niki Caro, who recently directed “The Zookeeper’s Wife”. Chinese actress Liu Yifei (Crystal Liu) will play the lead role of Mulan and Jet Li will play the character of the emperor of China.
Moreover, New Zealand actor Yoson An will play the role of Cheng Honghui, who will be Mulan’s most important ally and will eventually be her love interest.
A remake of something has always a difference from the original, so as Mulan. The remake of Mulan will feature new characters and lose some old favorite characters.
Most of the fans of the original Disney movie are specifically pointing out the absence of “Mushu” and her original love interest, “Li Shang”. But, maybe Disney is really aiming for a more realistic version of the film as “Mulan” can be a badass non-musical as it may seem in the trailer.
On the other hand, Disney fans are also rambling about making Mulan a Chinese woman as it is from the original film, but cannot do it with the lead actress for the Little Mermaid live-action remake.
The film will be in theaters on March 27, 2020.
