Universal Pictures has released its official trailer for the upcoming 2020 film, “Dolittle”, starring Robert Downey Jr.

Stephen Gaghan, who is known for screenwriting “Traffic” of Steven Soderbhergh, will direct and co-write the star-studded film. John Whittington, who is a writer on “The Lego Batman Movie”, will be the other co-writer.

Dolittle will be the new adaptation of the famous 1920’s and 1950’s Hugh Lofting-written children’s novels, “Dr. Dolittle”.

Downey Jr. will be playing the role of John Dolittle, who knowingly can talk to animals. The story is set in Victorian England, seven years after he lost his wife. Being alone in life, he has shared his house with several animals who became his companions. And then, when the young Queen Victoria, played by Jessie Buckley, fell ill, he had to have an epic adventure to a mystical land. His goal was to find a remedy to the queen’s ills.

Harry Collett will also be joining the group as Dunkirk, Dolittle’s apprentice. Dolittle’s furry friends will be the voices of Academy Award Winner Rami Malek as gorilla, Octavia Spencer as a duck, Kumail Nanjiana as an ostrich, and John Cena as a cheery polar bear. More importantly, Emma Thompson is the voice of the parrot, which is Dolittle’s closest confidante.

The film will also have Antonio Banderas, who is a recent Oscar contender for “Pain and Glory”, Michael Sheen, and Jim Broadbent. Meanwhile, additional voice performances will come from Marion Cotillard, Frances de la Tour, Carmen Ejogo, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez, Tom Holland, and Craig Robinson.

Nevertheless, Dolittle will be Downey Jr.’s first big project after his “Iron Man” retirement from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. He was a loyal MCU actor for a decade.

The film is set for release in the United States cinemas on January 17, 2020.
