Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Tuesday urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to continue with the distance learning modality and suspend the face-to-face classes despite President Duterte’s approval on the said proposal. This was the reaction of Gatchalian to the green light given by President Duterte to DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones regarding the planned face-to-face classes in areas under low-risk modified general community quarantine (MGCQ).

“I strongly urge the Department of Education to continue with the distance learning modality and suspend face-to-face classes this coming August 24,” Gatchalian said in a statement. “This is to protect our learners, parents, and teachers from the possibility of infection from the COVID-19 virus,” the Senate committee on basic education, arts, and culture further said. “The safety of our learners, parents, and teachers cannot be compromised. Our children are our greatest wealth and that their well-being should be protected at all cost,” he added.
