SM Supermalls will provide all-gender restrooms in Manila to show support for gender equality in the Philippines.
Yesterday, the firm announced that they will be installing the restrooms in its leading malls across the metro starting this coming November. SM Mall of Asia, SM City North Edsa, SM Megamall, SM Aura Premier, The Podium, and SM Seaside City Cebu are among the chosen malls.
“With inclusivity and innovation at the core of everything we do, we endeavor to create spaces where all shoppers are welcome,” said Steven Tan, the COO of SM Supermalls.
LGBTQ+ community has been tumulting after the viral incident of a transgender woman, Gretchen Diez, in a female restroom in one of the malls in Quezon City. Diez was not permitted to enter a female restroom by a janitress.
This results several uprisings from the members of the said community. Thus, many establishments have shown support by having all-gender restrooms to accommodate people who have different gender preferences.
Intimate space of men and women
On the other hand, a restroom is considered an intimate space of the two sexes. Therefore, men and women, especially conservative ones, tend to silently and vocally reject transgenders in the designated restrooms.
However, LGBTQ+ with their allies, believe they should be gaining the same respect as they are merely humans as well. And today, several establishments are gradually accepting and addressing their concerns.
Although, some discriminations might not end, regardless of what your gender is. At least, now, the hope of the LGBTQ+ community for gender equality is progressing.
