Despite many criticisms, the anti-abortion film “Unplanned” had a success in its showing in North America, and will debut to Filipino audiences on Aug 21.
The news was announced during the press conference and advance screening of the movie on Tuesday, which the lead actress Ashley Bratcher attended.
“Unplanned” is produced by Mike Manhardt and directed by Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman.
The film premiered in the U.S. last February and it is based on the “pro-life transformation” of a former abortion clinic director named Abby Johnson, a character played by Bratcher.
“Portraying Abby Johnson is a huge responsibility. To be able to tell the powerful story of her transformation was such an honor,” Bratcher told the press.
The actress also shared that she had the same stance as her character has in the film, not only because of her religion but also because of some scientific explanations.
“My stance, although I am a Christian, is rooted in science. Because science does back the pro-life stand in the sense that we know a human life is created in the moment of conception,” Bratcher explained.
Bratcher also pointed out that the advocacy of the film is to let people understand and realize what truly happens during an abortion.
“So many people have no idea what happens during an abortion procedure and that’s part of what ‘Unplanned’ is doing. It’s going behind the scenes and showing, not to the fullest extent practically, but you do see the ultrasound during the abortion procedure and there are people who do not realize that this is a child that is being ripped apart.”
The controversial topic
Although a lot of the critics still do not want to be persuaded by the moral of the film, giving it a one and two stars in Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, the DVD of Unplanned hits no. 1 on Amazon.
The film became a top-selling DVD for its initial release on Tuesday although it was suppressed by mainstream media — Motion Picture Association of America gave it an “R” rating and censorship on social media.
However, the makers of the movie were already happy with sales of 20,000-30,000 DVDs because they had pre-sold a lot of copies even without telling anyone it was out there.
Pro-abortion people in the U.S. argue that the activity would not actually matter as doctors would only pull off a tissue or clump of cells in that matter. However, Bratcher revealed the reason why the film is created, and that is to treat that kind of misinformation.
“I think that there is a lot of misinformation out there, and people are just wrapped up in the lie that it’s just a clump of cells, or it’s just tissue, it’s just fetal matter. But that is just not the case,” she said her interview with The Daily Signal.
“Unplanned” will exclusively premiere in SM cinemas nationwide on August 21.
